00:00:41:29 - 00:00:44:00
Welcome to another episode
00:00:44:00 - 00:00:47:00
of the Style
and Strategy podcast.
00:00:47:01 - 00:00:50:11
So today, I'm spending
a little bit of time
00:00:50:13 - 00:00:53:10
talking about style, right?
00:00:53:10 - 00:00:57:14
And ideal topic of comfort
versus confidence
00:00:57:14 - 00:00:58:19
in your style.
00:00:58:19 - 00:01:02:04
There appears to be
a little bit of,
00:01:02:16 - 00:01:05:16
I guess, mix up around
the fact believing that
00:01:05:21 - 00:01:08:21
And you can't have comfort
and confidence
00:01:09:04 - 00:01:11:22
if you're in kind
of leggings and a T
00:01:11:22 - 00:01:14:14
So today's episode,
we're going to have
00:01:14:14 - 00:01:16:26
a little bit of a chat
of trying to nail
00:01:16:26 - 00:01:20:24
that art of the smart casual
look at work.
00:01:21:15 - 00:01:24:13
But firstly, let me ask you,
00:01:24:13 - 00:01:26:02
when you look in the mirror,
00:01:26:02 - 00:01:29:05
does your outfit
actually excite you
00:01:29:15 - 00:01:33:08
or does it just feel like
the same old, same old?
00:01:33:13 - 00:01:35:27
You know what
I'm talking about.
00:01:35:27 - 00:01:38:10
So today
I want to flip the script,
00:01:38:10 - 00:01:39:08
on a common belief
00:01:39:08 - 00:01:43:05
that many of us hold in that
comfort in our clothes
00:01:43:05 - 00:01:46:25
is actually the key
to confidence.
00:01:47:02 - 00:01:49:15
So it's not the whole story.
00:01:49:15 - 00:01:51:13
So let's dive into it.
00:01:51:13 - 00:01:54:09
So, if I start
with a really,
00:01:54:09 - 00:01:57:09
common scenario
that I hear a lot, right?
00:01:57:19 - 00:02:00:11
So you're potentially
at work feeling
00:02:00:11 - 00:02:03:11
comfortable in your smart,
casual clothes.
00:02:03:22 - 00:02:05:07
They are practical.
00:02:05:07 - 00:02:07:02
They fit really well.
00:02:07:02 - 00:02:07:25
and you're
00:02:07:25 - 00:02:10:25
getting through your day
without a real hitch.
00:02:11:06 - 00:02:12:16
But here's the thing.
00:02:12:16 - 00:02:16:03
Comfort doesn't
always equate to confidence.
00:02:16:17 - 00:02:17:19
So in fact,
00:02:17:19 - 00:02:21:08
sometimes it can have
the opposite type of effect.
00:02:21:24 - 00:02:22:13
The belief
00:02:22:13 - 00:02:24:05
is that
if you're comfortable,
00:02:24:05 - 00:02:27:05
therefore, you automatically
feel confident.
00:02:27:19 - 00:02:31:02
it's kind of like
baking a cake
00:02:31:23 - 00:02:33:23
where the cake just won't
rise.
00:02:33:23 - 00:02:37:22
And similarly, if comfort is
your only focus,
00:02:37:28 - 00:02:41:10
you might find
that your stall feels flat,
00:02:41:12 - 00:02:43:13
leaving
you kind of uninspired.
00:02:44:17 - 00:02:48:00
So let's do a bit
of reality check shake out.
00:02:48:01 - 00:02:52:12
So comfort in your stall
is absolutely important,
00:02:53:01 - 00:02:53:25
but it shouldn't be
00:02:53:25 - 00:02:57:09
the only ingredient
in your stall recipe.
00:02:57:19 - 00:03:01:06
and why I say that is
because if you solely rely
00:03:01:06 - 00:03:02:28
on that comfort factor,
00:03:02:28 - 00:03:04:07
that's when you can really
00:03:04:07 - 00:03:05:29
find yourself
maybe turning into
00:03:05:29 - 00:03:07:21
a little bit
of a stall. Right?
00:03:07:21 - 00:03:10:16
So you may have experienced
00:03:10:16 - 00:03:12:06
at some point in time
reaching
00:03:12:06 - 00:03:14:10
for that same comfortable
piece, right?
00:03:14:10 - 00:03:17:09
Maybe it became
a stall uniform with you,
00:03:17:09 - 00:03:18:25
which has its positives,
00:03:18:25 - 00:03:22:20
but then also can make
you feel like,
00:03:23:00 - 00:03:25:05
you're starting to blend
into the background.
00:03:25:05 - 00:03:28:08
And sometimes that's where
the problem actually lies.
00:03:28:18 - 00:03:31:08
Well, being comfortable
in your outfit
00:03:31:08 - 00:03:33:21
enables
you to feel really secure.
00:03:33:21 - 00:03:37:11
it can also trap you
in a cycle that really dulls
00:03:37:11 - 00:03:39:26
your excitement
and creativity.
00:03:39:26 - 00:03:41:01
So let's face it.
00:03:41:01 - 00:03:43:25
Dressing should be more
than just about comfort.
00:03:43:25 - 00:03:46:05
It's really
about expressing who you are
00:03:46:05 - 00:03:47:22
and where you're headed.
00:03:47:22 - 00:03:50:22
If you dress in a way that
00:03:50:27 - 00:03:54:02
really reflects
your evolving personal
00:03:54:02 - 00:03:57:08
brand, that's when you start
to feel that spark again.
00:03:58:04 - 00:04:01:23
So how do you start
to break out of this
00:04:02:03 - 00:04:03:11
trap, right,
00:04:03:11 - 00:04:06:00
try to get that balance
between comfort and style?
00:04:06:00 - 00:04:07:19
I know I've had many,
listeners
00:04:07:19 - 00:04:09:23
go, please tell me it's
possible though.
00:04:09:23 - 00:04:13:01
Can I please be able to be
comfortable and have style?
00:04:13:01 - 00:04:15:13
And the answer is 100% yes.
00:04:15:13 - 00:04:16:25
and it's not the Holy Grail,
00:04:16:25 - 00:04:19:15
which is going to be
really impossible to get to.
00:04:19:15 - 00:04:22:16
So I want you to take away
these four key tips.
00:04:22:17 - 00:04:25:16
What what really makes
you smile?
00:04:25:16 - 00:04:26:26
So think about that image of
00:04:26:26 - 00:04:28:25
when you stand
in front of the mirror.
00:04:28:25 - 00:04:30:04
Think about those pieces
00:04:30:04 - 00:04:32:12
that you know
really bring you joy.
00:04:32:12 - 00:04:35:24
And maybe it's a bold color
that you've been hesitant
00:04:35:24 - 00:04:38:20
to wear because you
thinking, oh, I'm not sure.
00:04:38:20 - 00:04:42:02
Maybe it's, an accessory and
bold necklace or something
00:04:42:02 - 00:04:43:23
that's maybe gathering dust.
00:04:44:22 - 00:04:47:15
Have a think about
what's actually holding
00:04:47:15 - 00:04:50:19
you back from incorporating
those into your outfit.
00:04:51:08 - 00:04:55:03
Is it merely a perception
of what others may think?
00:04:55:04 - 00:04:55:16
Is it
00:04:55:16 - 00:04:57:05
that you just think
that I may not
00:04:57:05 - 00:04:58:22
be able to pull that off?
00:04:58:22 - 00:05:01:07
And if it's about not
being able to pull that off,
00:05:01:07 - 00:05:05:11
I want you to start with
really small steps, right.
00:05:05:11 - 00:05:07:03
And get your confidence.
00:05:07:03 - 00:05:08:08
I've got a client
00:05:08:08 - 00:05:10:19
that I've been working with
for a number of years,
00:05:10:19 - 00:05:13:19
and the outfits
that we put her in today
00:05:13:27 - 00:05:15:21
are much more bold than they
00:05:15:21 - 00:05:18:23
were when we first started,
because we have to work
00:05:18:23 - 00:05:20:07
along that journey
00:05:20:07 - 00:05:21:21
to get you to the point
00:05:21:21 - 00:05:23:27
where you start
to really feel comfy
00:05:23:27 - 00:05:26:25
and comfortable
in the style, to be able
00:05:26:25 - 00:05:29:25
to take some of those
more bold choices.
00:05:30:03 - 00:05:31:17
Number two is
00:05:31:17 - 00:05:35:23
how can you reflect your
really evolving self, right.
00:05:35:23 - 00:05:38:18
Because never stay stagnant.
00:05:38:18 - 00:05:41:25
So your personal brand
is not a static thing.
00:05:42:07 - 00:05:42:27
it's something that
00:05:42:27 - 00:05:46:00
you will be revisiting time
and time again,
00:05:46:18 - 00:05:48:16
because you, an individual,
are taking in
00:05:48:16 - 00:05:50:19
lots of things
around the world
00:05:50:19 - 00:05:52:25
and, you know,
you're absorbing things
00:05:52:25 - 00:05:55:25
resonate today that maybe
they didn't resonate before.
00:05:56:10 - 00:06:01:13
So why should your wardrobe
be any different?
00:06:02:01 - 00:06:05:23
So I want you to think about
how can you,
00:06:06:03 - 00:06:10:03
think about your style in
a way where you can evolve
00:06:10:03 - 00:06:13:17
and reflect where you are
now in your life and career,
00:06:13:23 - 00:06:16:20
both, you know, personally
and professionally,
00:06:16:20 - 00:06:19:10
and then, really,
what do you want
00:06:19:10 - 00:06:22:05
your clothes
to say about you?
00:06:22:05 - 00:06:25:14
And then number three
is really important around
00:06:25:14 - 00:06:30:18
where are you going and
where do you want you to be?
00:06:30:19 - 00:06:32:18
What do you aspiring to.
00:06:32:18 - 00:06:35:22
Because your wardrobe
should absolutely support
00:06:35:22 - 00:06:36:18
your goals.
00:06:37:20 - 00:06:39:03
Now that could be
00:06:39:03 - 00:06:42:07
both from a professional
and a personal perspective.
00:06:42:07 - 00:06:45:01
But let's say you're aiming
for that promotion.
00:06:45:01 - 00:06:48:08
Does your style really align
with that leadership
00:06:48:08 - 00:06:52:01
position that you're looking
for or aspiring to? Or
00:06:52:01 - 00:06:55:11
maybe you're transitioning
to a new phase of life?
00:06:55:26 - 00:06:59:09
Does your wardrobe
really reflect that change?
00:06:59:09 - 00:07:01:10
And the person you are
00:07:01:10 - 00:07:03:14
and the person
you want to become?
00:07:03:14 - 00:07:06:18
And then number four
is really around.
00:07:07:04 - 00:07:12:01
Think about all of this
in context of consideration.
00:07:12:14 - 00:07:13:02
Right.
00:07:13:02 - 00:07:16:02
So it's not just about
ditching comfort.
00:07:16:13 - 00:07:18:17
Instead it's
about integrating pieces
00:07:18:17 - 00:07:19:20
that really resonate
00:07:19:20 - 00:07:23:00
with your current identity
and aspiration.
00:07:23:19 - 00:07:25:22
Maybe it's
that mixing in that color
00:07:25:22 - 00:07:27:19
that will lift your spirits
today.
00:07:27:19 - 00:07:29:10
Maybe it's a cut,
00:07:29:10 - 00:07:32:04
in a particular style of
garment that makes you feel
00:07:33:03 - 00:07:35:19
more strong, more powerful.
00:07:35:19 - 00:07:39:20
Or maybe it's that
little touch of an accessory
00:07:39:20 - 00:07:43:26
that is uniquely
representing who you are.
00:07:44:19 - 00:07:46:09
Might be
any of these things.
00:07:46:09 - 00:07:47:21
So comfort really
00:07:47:21 - 00:07:50:00
is a foundational element
of style,
00:07:50:00 - 00:07:52:02
but it shouldn't
be the only one.
00:07:52:02 - 00:07:55:02
So I really want you
to think about expanding
00:07:55:02 - 00:07:56:25
your focus beyond that.
00:07:56:25 - 00:07:58:23
And, you know, really start
00:07:58:23 - 00:08:02:10
to include pieces that
excite you, inspire you.
00:08:02:26 - 00:08:05:14
And then what you'll end up
finding is you'll start
00:08:05:14 - 00:08:09:11
to feel more confident
and connected to the pieces
00:08:09:11 - 00:08:13:05
that you purchase and wear
and by extension,
00:08:14:08 - 00:08:17:08
your brand will really start
to evolve.
00:08:17:28 - 00:08:19:13
Remember
that style is actually
00:08:19:13 - 00:08:22:19
a reflection of your journey
and where you're at, so
00:08:22:21 - 00:08:25:21
give it a chance
to really evolve with you.
00:08:26:05 - 00:08:30:16
So I hope that some of these
tips today have inspired
00:08:30:16 - 00:08:31:06
you a little bit,
00:08:31:06 - 00:08:34:15
maybe made you think
a little bit differently
00:08:34:22 - 00:08:38:17
about how you're perceiving
your brand and your style,
00:08:38:29 - 00:08:42:18
and really start to think
about where you're headed
00:08:42:18 - 00:08:44:19
in that direction.
00:08:44:19 - 00:08:47:17
So if you need a little bit
of help along that journey,
00:08:47:17 - 00:08:51:00
feel free to book
in one of my 30 minute brand
00:08:51:00 - 00:08:54:00
and style activation calls.
00:08:54:04 - 00:08:55:23
during these activation
calls,
00:08:55:23 - 00:08:57:26
we're going to do a bit
of a branded style audit.
00:08:57:26 - 00:08:59:17
And so that way
you can come out of it
00:08:59:17 - 00:09:01:07
feeling really clear.
00:09:01:07 - 00:09:04:17
You've got a bit more
direction going forward.
00:09:04:26 - 00:09:06:15
I'd love to connect
with you.
00:09:06:15 - 00:09:11:01
And, let me know what
you think of these tips.
00:09:11:10 - 00:09:12:07
have a great day.
